So, Tat and I had been to Cancun a couple of times before but this experience was a first. One of the activities that we always make sure to do during a beach vacation is snorkel and so we were ecstatic when the excursion company also threw in a speed boat, all for $50… Little did we know, we would be the actual captains of the ship!
Now let’s rewind a bit… y’all know that we always enjoy a nice little breakfast to get our day started. We happened to stumble upon a booking company for tours the day before and decided to partake in this one. After eating, we walked down the street to the tour location and met at the dock. Once we arrived we checked in, signed waivers (ya know because we could die), and collected our snorkel gear. We were shocked to find out that we were assigned to our own actual speedboat; We’ve never even driven a speed boat in our lives, but… Okay! So, we focus our attention back to the guide who explains how the activities would go- We’d first drive our speedboats through the lagoon, over the mangroves (MANGROVES! That sounds like the boat might flip!!!), and finally to the snorkel location in ocean. After the guide was done explaining the excursion’s events to us, we were led to the boats. Tat and I hopped in the last one and waited for further instruction. Once everyone else loaded into the boats the guide stood on the dock and explained that we would drive in single file (wait, do you drive a boat or steer it? Mmm… ooops, I’m getting sidetracked, I digress). He demonstrated the signal for us to do if in distress, how to stop and go, hopped in his boat in front of the line and said “Let’s Go!” (Side eye cause’ though directions were iffy).
Anyway, lets get into how our boating skills went… I took to the wheel first with Tat in the passenger seat, judging. Tell me why AS SOON AS we pulled off, we got stuck! Tat and I are in the boat yelling and displaying the distress signal- The rest of the line, riding off into the horizon, long gone. At some point I guess the guide decided to look back and noticed that a we were missing. Once he reached us, clearly annoyed, he got us unstuck and ushered us back to line- Turns out we had seaweed stuck in our propeller soooooo, it wasn’t really or fault.
Continuing the tour, were doing our thing and here comes the sprinkles. Yup, It started lightly raining and guess what we discovered- Rain and speed do not mix well. It felt like pellets were smacking us. This is all happening while Tat is directing me to stay in the path that the boat in front of us was leaving, it was much easier said than done; She found that out when it was her turn to drive!
We finally make it to the snorkel destination, the sun is back out, and were ready to have a grand time. Boom, snorkeling was fun and a very cool experience as there is an underwater museum!
Fast-forward to turn time, its now Tat’s turn to get us back to where we started and guess what happened… it started raining again! I’m in the passenger seat trying to see while getting smacked with painful raindrops, I looked to the right and somehow Tat is sitting much higher than me. The damn boat was tipping on 4-4’s. The entire time back Tat trying to fight the waves, rain, and all the other elements of nature. We were cracking up!!!!! We finally made it back to the dock, in one piece thankfully!
We still laugh about how we were just freely handed the keys to a boat! It started off a hot mess but we were able to gather our bearings and by the end, we were boating pros!
Yall’s faces were hilarious!!! The definition of “gots to see it through my boi”!!!
OMG only you two!
